Guest Speaker: Karen Bass, Speaker-elect
California State Assembly
Vice-Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus
Majority Floor Leader
47th Assembly District

Bio
Karen Bass has been a State Assembly Member representing Los Angeles’ 47th
District since 2005. Speaker Fabian Núñez selected Bass as the Majority Leader for
the California State Assembly during the 2007-2008 legislative session, making her
the first African American and the first woman to hold this leadership position.
During the 2005-2006 legislative session, Bass served as the Majority Whip. She
also serves as the chair of the Select Committee on Foster Care.

Since taking office, Majority Leader Bass has made Foster Care Reform her top
priority. As chair of the Select Committee on Foster Care, she has organized
bipartisan participation that has resulted in a legislative package of 25 bills
focusing on improving the state’s Foster Care System. These measures reflect the
voices of hundreds of children, parents, foster families, labor unions, government
experts and foster family agencies who testified at more than 15 public hearings
hosted by Bass throughout California. She also has helped secure $82 million in the
2006/2007 state budget for Foster Care Reform, which is the largest increased
allocation in more than a decade and develop new laws to help improve the System.

Honorary Chairperson: Bern Nadette Stanis
(Thelma of Good Times)

Bio
She is best known as Thelma from Good Times! But there's much more to her than
that. In the 70s, Bern Nadette Stanis was the personification of Black Beauty. As
sophisticated and graceful as she was, she still became TV's first Black sex
symbol or "It" girl. Thelma/Bern Nadette and The Evans Family also proved many
stereotypes wrong about the ghetto and the young black girl, like for instance...that
all Black girls and Black families in the ghetto had no hopes, dreams, or class.
Thelma showed that a "ghetto girl" had hopes and dreams, intelligence, respect,
dignity and grace, and it wasn't just acting, Bern Nadette was that naturally. She
introduced a new definitive image of the young Black girl and woman.

Stanis is back with a vengeance in her quest to quell apparent ‘self-esteem issues’
and insecurities in our young generation.  She not only is a well sought after guest
speaker and panelist for some of the most coveted national speaking event.  She is
the author of Situations 101 and For Men Only.  Her hope is to go beyond scraping
the surface of why we tolerate what we do, but dig deeper and breach the core of
self-destructive behavior in relationships.
Bern Nadette Stanis’ books will be available for purchase at the event.
