  Depression… A Family Affair

When someone is depressed, their suffering affects everyone around
them. Depression hurts. In ways we can see, and in ways we can’t see.

Depressed people find it harder to feel connected to others, so they
spend more and more time alone. They are less involved in social
activities. Their self concept becomes inadequate. Their sleep habits
change. Their eating habits change. They get lethargic. They get
agitated easily. They get angry easily. They get into fights easily. They
stop having fun. They become physically ill. Children refuse to go to
school. Adults lose their jobs. They lose hope, they lose faith. They
become self destructive. Sometimes they become abusive. Sometimes
they become suicidal. And, everyone around them begins to share the
fallout of their increasingly depressed behavior.  Life changes for the
worse for whole family.

Depression has many faces
The child who
Is hungry
Is neglected.
Is abused
The teenager who
Doesn’t finish school
Can’t find a job
Is pregnant and alone
The parent who
Isn’t working
Can’t afford adequate housing for their family
Is too drunk or strung out to take care of their kids
The addict who
Will never escape the corner
Will never escape the pull of the street
Can no longer pretend their might be a bright future
Anyone, everyone, who
Has burned out
Is feeling hopeless and helpless
